We sat down with her to get a better idea of who Cara Saven is and how her business has come to be an internationally acclaimed hub for wall design. Who is Cara Saven?
I am someone that has a passion for business and finding the quickest route to a solution, which is why I love wallpaper (it’s the easiest way to completely transform a space). I am a born and bred Capetonian which means I am happiest on a mountain or beach. I have 2 teenage daughters, a husband I have been with since I was 18 years old and a noisy animal-filled home. I find my creativity through business as well as through designing and curating gorgeous wall coverings that I get a huge kick out of seeing installed in places all around the world.
Walk us through your selection process.
To be honest, it’s not much of a process. It’s more a feeling I get around what is happening in décor trends, around what I see when I am out and about or scrolling or its driven by our customers who often request designs that if we don’t have specifically, will create a version of.
What is the most important tip people should know about wallpaper but don’t?
It’s more a tip people need to know about digitally printed wallpaper and how different it is from the rolls of screen-printed wallpapers they buy in a store. They are fundamentally different both in feel and in looks. The great thing about digitally printed wallpaper is that you can get the exact design and colour you are after and we can print it in one large piece so you never have to see a join line.
What is your favourite design moment/trend in the last decade?
It’s the trend we are seeing right now and that is around wrapping the entire room in a mural-style wallpaper and even covering the ceiling.
